Trader arraigned for alleged threat to pastor’s life

A 43-year-old trader, Simeon Oyerinde, appeared before the Okitipupa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State on Friday, facing charges of threatening the life of Rev. Paul Oyelapo.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is accused of two counts of breaching the peace and making threats to Oyelapo’s life. According to the prosecutor, ASP Zedekiah Orogbemi, the defendant committed these offenses on July 24 at 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Ayeka, Okitipupa.

Orogbemi alleged that the defendant had a verbal altercation with the complainant, Oyelapo, during which he was shouting and threatening to harm him. These actions, the prosecutor argued, violate Sections 249(d) and 86 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Magistrate, Mr. Cletus Ojuola, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 and required a surety of equal value. The surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide evidence of two years’ tax payment to the state government.

The case was adjourned until October 16 for further proceedings.
