In Monastir, Tunisia, on Saturday, Nigeria’s under-18 Women’s Handball Team secured a 28-24 victory over their Angolan counterparts in the third-place showdown of the ongoing Africa Women’s Youth Handball Championship.
Following their disappointing 18-32 loss to Egypt in the semi-finals the previous day, the Nigerian team displayed resilience by gaining a five-point lead in the initial match, ending with a score of 12-7. They maintained their winning momentum in the second half, ultimately triumphing over the Angolan team with a final score of 28-24. This victory marked a significant turnaround for the Nigerian squad.
Speaking later, Nigeria’s coach, Shittu Agboola, said his team played well.
“We wanted to play the final instead of the third place. Unfortunately, we lost the semi-final against Egypt yesterday.
“The most important thing which was a success to us is that we have qualified for the 2024 IHF Women’s Youth World Championship,” he said.
NAN reports that in the final match, defending champion, Egypt retained their title as they comfortably hammered their counterparts, Guinea 29-16 to be crowned champion of the 2023 Africa Women’s YHC.
