Club Brugge coach, Ronny Deila, has openly admitted his regret, acknowledging that he made a “foolish” decision by not signing Nigerian striker Victor Boniface during his tenure as Valerenga’s coach.
Boniface, whose career has since skyrocketed over the past four years, once underwent trials at Valerenga but was turned away during Deila’s leadership.
However, the 22-year-old forward eventually found success with former Norwegian powerhouse Bodø/Glimt in 2019.
Following a remarkable stint at the club, he secured a move to Belgian side Royale Union Saint Gilliose in a deal valued at €6.1 million.
After an impressive debut season in Belgium, Boniface’s exceptional performances led to a €20 million transfer to Bayer Leverkusen, having scored 17 goals and provided 12 assists in 51 games.
Since he arrived at the club in the summer, Boniface has been on fire. His performances have been outstanding registering
six goals and three assists in six appearances.
“I made a mistake once, but that had nothing to do with work ethic. Boniface was on trial with me at Valerenga,” Deila told Nieuwsblad.
“I already had a similar striker, so I didn’t care about Boniface. He went to Bodø/Glimt afterward. Stupid of me.”
