On Thursday, passionate fans of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad, gathered at the Lekki Phase 1 Gate in Lagos State to stage a protest and call for justice in the wake of the singer’s untimely death.
The protest, which commenced at 5 p.m., was organized by the late singer’s management, and it served as a precursor to a tribute concert that kicked off at 8 p.m. at Muri Okunola Park.
The management had announced the protest earlier in the week through Mohbad’s official social media account, expressing gratitude for the immense love shown by fans worldwide and acknowledging the various events organized in communities as a way to honor and pay respects to the departed artist. The message invited everyone to join the candlelight procession and tribute concert in memory of Mohbad.
The protesters, clad in white T-shirts, came together to play and dance to the late artist’s songs as a heartfelt gesture of their final respects and tribute.
In a preceding event, a group of Lagos residents, operating under the banner “Justice for Mohbad” and led by prominent Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo, had taken to the streets on Wednesday. They converged at the Lagos State House of Assembly, calling on lawmakers to investigate the mysterious death of the 27-year-old musician, Ireoluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
During the encounter with the House Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who was represented by several House members, the protest leader, Ojo, emphasized that their primary goal was to seek justice for Mohbad, whose demise occurred under circumstances that remain unclear.
She said, “It is no longer news that Lagosians are agitating for justice over the death of Mr Ireoluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, who died under some unclear circumstances.
“Mohbad had posted videos of how he had been under serious attacks from members of the record label he left to be on his own.
“Even though we know the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State has started an investigation over the cause of the mysterious death, we seek justice.”
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has said the autopsy conducted on Mohbad has been concluded.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to US during a telephone conversation on Thursday.
He said, “Autopsy has been concluded. Awaiting results.”
This development followed the exhumation of Mohbad by a combined team of the Nigeria Police Force and health officials.
The police also arrested the nurse who reportedly injected the deceased singer prior to his demise on Tuesday, September 12.
Earlier on, while responding to an enquiry by our correspondent concerning arrests made by the police in connection with the late singer’s death, Hundeyin said, “I can’t answer questions on the arrests yet because I don’t have that update. However, the nurse is in our custody; I can confirm that.”
The late singer and former signee of Marlian Music owned by Naira Marley died at the age of 27 last Tuesday.
