In a significant announcement, King Mohammed VI of Morocco has unveiled plans to allocate $11.6 million (equivalent to 120 billion dirhams) towards the reconstruction of areas severely impacted by the devastating earthquake that struck on September 8. This commitment aims to provide support to more than 4.2 million individuals who were affected by the catastrophic event.

During his statement on Wednesday, King Mohammed VI highlighted the nation’s dedication to aiding those impacted by the earthquake, emphasizing the importance of assisting the affected population during these trying times. The palace further revealed that the allocated funds would be utilized over a five-year period to address various aspects of recovery, including the resettlement of affected individuals, reconstruction of homes, and the restoration of essential infrastructure.

The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 6.8, resulted in a tragic loss of over 2,900 lives and left more than 5,000 people injured. This natural disaster stands as the most potent earthquake recorded in Morocco in over six decades, underscoring the urgency and importance of these recovery efforts.

King Mohammed VI’s commitment to rebuilding and supporting the affected regions is a testament to the nation’s resilience and solidarity in the face of adversity. The allocated funds will play a crucial role in the restoration and revitalization of communities affected by this tragic event, offering hope for a brighter future in the midst of recovery efforts.

Morocco has, hitherto, received international support to the tune of $700m in donations to help with its earthquake recovery plan.

The earthquake destroyed infrastructure and more than 50,000 homes in the High Atlas Mountains.

The country plans to make up the deficit using funds allocated by the Moroccan government, international aid and continued donations to the earthquake recovery fund.
