Hamisu Danjibga, a correspondent for the Voice of Nigeria (VON), was killed, according to the Zamfara council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The deceased’s body was allegedly dumped in a soakaway and was discovered on Wednesday, according to a statement by Ibrahim Ahmad, the NUJ secretary.
“The discovery of his corpse was a result of an unpleasant odour observed by children of an Islamic school behind his house in the evening of Wednesday, September 20, 2023,” said the NUJ statement. “After breaking the soakaway, the dead body was confirmed to be that of Danjibga by his family and some neighbours.”
Prior to his body being discovered, Mr. Danjibga had been missing for three days.
According to sources, the family was first asked to pay N1 million to secure the man’s release.
The police have detained a suspect in the interim.
The NUJ sent its sympathies to the VON and the family of the deceased.
It asked security organizations to look into the journalist’s death in great detail and hold those responsible accountable.
According to Islamic edicts, the deceased had been interred in Gusau.
