In the inaugural game of the Africa Women’s Youth Handball Championship in Monastir, Tunisia, the National Under-18 women’s handball team from Nigeria secured a convincing 28-18 victory against their Algerian counterparts on Saturday.
The Nigerian team demonstrated commendable performance in their debut match, earning pride for the nation. Despite a challenging first half that concluded with a tied score of 10-10 against the Algerians, Nigeria showcased their strength in the second half, outscoring their North African opponents 18-8, resulting in a final score of 28-18 in favor of Nigeria.
The Nigerian team’s coach, Shittu Agboola, described the game as “a good beginning.”
“I noticed that the girls were having unnecessary turnovers, so I made some tactical changes that saw the team use the wings more in the second half.
“The girls all played to instructions which gave us a good result. We are here to win all our games; we came for a serious business,” he said.
Taiwo Babatunde of the Nigerian team was voted the Most Valuable Player of the match.
NAN reports that Nigeria is in group A with Tunisia, Algeria, and Guinea.
Nigeria will play their next match against Guinea on Sunday at 4 p.m.
NAN reports that the 19th Africa Women’s Youth Handball Championship, which started on Saturday, is expected to end on September 23.
