Temmie Ovwasa, formerly known as YBNL Princess during her time as a signee of Olamide’s YBNL record label, has publicly criticized her former boss, Olamide, for alleged maltreatment during her tenure with the label.
In response to the untimely passing of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad, Ovwasa shared insights into her experience as a YBNL signee. She revealed that she had lived in Olamide’s home, where her role extended beyond being an artist. She claimed to have acted as an errand girl and nanny for Olamide’s wife, Adebukunmi Adedeji, and their child.
Ovwasa further alleged that Olamide failed to fulfill his obligations as outlined in the record contract they signed in 2016. She also accused him of humiliating her by excluding her from the album art for the 2018 YBNL collective project, ‘YBNL MaFia Family.’ While other featured artists appeared in the album art, Ovwasa’s avatar was notably replaced with an image of her face hanging on the wall.
These revelations from Temmie Ovwasa have sparked discussions surrounding artist-label dynamics, contractual obligations, and artist treatment within the Nigerian music industry.
“The joint album we recorded, why is my face on the wall, you misogynistic piece of shit.”
Commenting on the untimely passing of MohBad, Temmie Ovwasa emphasized the damaging effects of the pressure placed on artists by both their fans and record labels.
She pointed out that many artists who speak out against perceived injustices within their record labels often face negative labels, being unfairly branded as addicts or ingrates. This observation underscores the challenges artists face when they attempt to voice their concerns and seek a more equitable and transparent working relationship within the music industry.
“I came to Lagos to sing, your structureless label put me in a house with your wife, and she turned me into her freaking errand girl.
“Do you know how wild it is to answer ‘yes ma’ to a girl who is just two years older than you because you need to get your life on track?
“And don’t even get me started on the shady political affiliations that I can only keep quiet about if I don’t want to be unalive.
“Last last, I’m not Nigeria’s sacrificial lamb, and that one is not my story to tell. I hope MohBad rests in peace. You people have unalive him, go and eat his body.
“But I honestly will not forget this one. I can’t. He spoke up. We usually do but we are all addicts and ungrateful artists. Continue.”
