Government offices and banks remained closed on Tuesday, September 5, as workers across the country observed the two-day strike action called by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC). Our reporter, who conducted observations in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi state, noted the impact of the strike.
The closure of banks left many customers stranded, with some attempting to use Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) for their transactions. However, many complained about having other transactions that required in-person assistance.
In addition to the banks, the state Headquarters of the Judiciary, located opposite the Old Government House, was also closed as lawyers and judges refrained from work.
A similar situation was observed at the Ochudo Secretariat, where all the Ministries are situated.
This situation led to the rescheduling of meetings and events by some top government officials who had originally planned to hold them on Tuesday in their respective ministries.
The compliance with the strike action was described as total, impressive, and satisfactory. The strike was carried out as part of the NLC’s efforts to protest the removal of fuel subsidies and address the associated hardships faced by Nigerians.
Egwa: “All Offices are locked from Judiciary to UBEB to Secretariat. I am glad and impressed that oir people are begining to see the need for them to make their voices heard.”
