Ogun pastor sets lady on fire as ‘deliverance’ goes wrong

A pastor named Taiwo Odebiyi is accused of setting Sukura Owodunni, 21, on fire at his Cherubim and Seraphim Maberu Parish in Offin, Sagamu, Ogun State, when he was attempting to perform deliverance on her.

The incident took place on August 17, 2023, when the victim went to the church at the pastor’s invitation for a special prayer.

Our correspondent also discovered that the victim was instructed by the priest to purchase local eggs, the scent Amazing Grace, and a candle for the specific prayer.

The priest is alleged to have lit the candle and applied the perfume to the woman’s body while praying for her.

Owodunni allegedly burst into flames as soon as the pastor lighted the candle, severely burning her chest, shoulder, and legs in the process.

According to a witness, the suspect was promptly detained after CSP Abdulfattah Ogunsanya, the divisional police officer for Adigbe, and his colleagues rushed the location on Tuesday, according to PUNCH Metro.

When reached, SP Omolola Odutola, the state police public relations officer, verified the occurrence to our correspondent on Wednesday and said that additional inquiry had started to clarify the facts of the matter.

“The lady was said to have been abandoned to fend for her medical bills after the incident. The victim has been taken to the hospital for medical attention.

“Our men have arrested the suspect. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department after the preliminary investigation is perfected,” Odutola said.
