The Delta State Police Command reported on Tuesday that it had apprehended over 100 individuals suspected of being involved in a same-sex wedding ceremony at a hotel within Delta state.
The Command in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, the state police department announced its intention to present the detainees to the public shortly.
“Delta State Command has arrested over a hundred gay suspects in a hotel carrying out a gay wedding ceremony. We will be going live shortly on Facebook to parade the said suspects.”
According to The PUNCH news outlet, ever since the enactment of the anti-gay legislation in 2014, individuals perceived as homosexuals have frequently been arrested and publicly displayed by law enforcement agencies.
In December 2020, the Lagos State Police Command detained ten individuals on suspicion of engaging in homosexual activities at a brothel situated in the Okota district of the state.
Furthermore, in 2018, the police in the same state exhibited 57 men who were accused of participating in alleged homosexual activities at the Kelly Ann hotel in Egbeda.
In January 2022, eight individuals suspected of engaging in same-sex activities were apprehended at a hotel in Isolo, Lagos.
As reported by The PUNCH, the 2014 anti-gay legislation prescribes a 14-year prison sentence for individuals found guilty of engaging in sexual relations with members of the same sex.
