Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has removed a row of shops illegally built on road setbacks and directly under powerline cables along Laurel School Crescent by Red Street, Bungalow Estate, off Isheri Osun Road, Jakande Area of Ejigbo, Lagos.
According to General Manager, LASBCA, Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, the removal of the block of shops was deemed necessary because of the imminent danger they pose to lives and properties of the occupants due to the electromagnetic radiations that is very harmful to the human body.
Oki further re-emphasized that the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Laws prohibit the erection of structures under the powerlines and road setbacks, it also specifies the distance that should be observed between a building and a public utility such as powerline cables.
He disclosed that, prior to the removal, necessary notices were served, including Contravention, Quit, and Demolition Notices.
The General Manager further reiterated the Agency’s readiness and commitment to ridding the state of illegalities in the built environment by ensuring that the State Building Codes were strictly adhered to as this would help reduce to zero, level the menace of building collapse in the state.
He implored building owners/developers to stop the construction of both residential and commercial buildings on road setbacks and powerline cables because of the imminent danger such an act poses to the general public.
