Dangote Begins Health Awareness Campaign In Kogi

Dangote Cement Plc has initiated an awareness campaign to contribute to the government’s efforts in curbing the spread of various diseases, including anthrax.

This awareness campaign was launched in the four communities where the Dangote Cement Company operates, namely Oyo, Iwaa, Apata, and Obajana.

It’s noteworthy that back in July, the federal government confirmed Nigeria’s first case of anthrax, which was detected on a farm in Niger State. Prior to this, the government had already alerted the public about the prevalence of anthrax in neighboring countries within the West African sub-region. They had also advised Nigerians to avoid consuming hides commonly known as “ponmo.”

During the event held in Obajana, Mr. Ademola Adeyemi, the General Manager of Community Affairs/Special Duties at Dangote Cement Plc, Obajana Plant, emphasized the importance of good neighborliness and information sharing for the collective benefit of all. He encouraged attendees to actively share the information within the community.

At the sensitization program in Obajana, Kogi State, Dr. Akinola Adewale, representing Dangote Cement Plc, explained that anthrax is caused by a spore-forming bacterium known as Bacillus anthracis. This bacterium primarily affects animals like cattle, sheep, and goats. Dr. Adewale highlighted that the disease can also be transmitted to humans who come into direct contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products like hides, wool, and meat.

He further explained that a telltale sign of infection in animals is the continued flow of blood from the animal’s anus, ears, and mouth after death.

Dr. Olufemi Adebayo, a member of the medical team, advised that sick animals should be quarantined. He also urged livestock owners to promptly report any cases of suspicious illness or death among their animals.
