Rivers State police, in partnership with the PHALGA security watch and the State Neighborhood Watch, detained 12 accused online fraudsters known as Yahoo guys for reportedly burying a newborn infant alive at Andoni Waterfront, Eagle Island in Port Harcourt.
Victor Ohaji, Chairman of PLGA security watch and Chief Security Officer of Eagle Island, said he received intelligence that certain Yahoo guys were performing incantation near the shoreline on Wednesday.
He stated that he mobilized his guys and that when he arrived to the shoreline, the youngsters had already departed.
According to Ohaji, the teenagers buried something in the shoreline after rigorous inspection.
He said that while excavating, a deceased newborn baby boy was unearthed from the ground.
He said that he notified the Rivers State Neighbourhood Police and the Station Officer of the Police Post at Eagle Island, who contacted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Azikiwe Police Division.
According to him, the PLGA Security Watch, Rivers State Neighbourhood Police, and the police were all mobilized and proceeded in pursuit of the culprits.
He stated that while they were scouring Eagle Island, the suspects who were coming out of one hotel noticed them and fled in various directions, adding that the combined security team captured 12 of them and sent them to the Azikiwe Police Division in Port Harcourt.
SP Grace Iringe Koko, the state Police Public Relations Officer, acknowledged the event.
Meanwhile, Prince Wiro, a human rights campaigner, has criticized the incident.
Wiro, the National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, called the occurrence “the height of wickedness and man’s inhumanity to man.”
While congratulating the security personnel on their accomplishment, the rights advocate urged the police to expand their investigation in order to apprehend fugitive culprits and guarantee justice in the case.
