Coco Gauff, the rising American teenage tennis sensation, achieved a significant milestone by triumphing over Karolina Muchova in a straight-set victory to secure the Cincinnati Open title, marking the most significant success of her young career.
Building on her astonishing upset over top seed Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals, Gauff clinched a 6-3, 6-4 victory against her Czech opponent in the championship match.
This achievement marks the 19-year-old’s fifth career title, and her third of the year 2023, following her victories in Washington, DC, and Auckland.
The Cincinnati Open victory provides Gauff with a substantial boost leading into the US Open, which commences on August 28, 2023.
Notably, Gauff became the first teenager since Bianca Andreescu in 2019 to secure three WTA titles within a single year.
Seeded seventh, Gauff showcased her dominance by breaking her opponent, whom she encountered for the first time, on three occasions in the initial set. She confidently served out the set to love, displaying her prowess in her first appearance in a WTA 1000 final.
Muchova, who is on the cusp of entering the top 10 for the first time, encountered struggles with consistency. A crucial missed backhand in the fifth game of the second set allowed Gauff to seize the break advantage.
While Gauff had some challenges converting match-point opportunities while serving at 5-2, she successfully secured victory in her following service game.
Reflecting on her journey, Gauff expressed her disbelief and joy, especially considering the obstacles she faced earlier in the season, including a disappointing exit at Wimbledon.
She acknowledged the emotional difficulties she endured and stated, “I’m just happy to be here in this moment. I spent a lot of nights alone crying, trying to figure it out.”
In the men’s doubles final, Jamie Murray and New Zealand’s Michael Venus faced a championship point against Argentina’s Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni but ultimately lost 3-6, 6-1, 11-9. Gonzalez, at 40 years old, delivered a second-serve ace during a critical moment and sealed victory with a decisive return off a Venus serve.
