Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, has issued a directive to the state’s administration of criminal justice monitoring and coordination committee to ensure the swift and thorough handling of all criminal cases within the state’s judiciary.
During a ceremony where he administered the oath of office to four judges—Nuraddeen Abdulmumini, Halima Lawal Bagiwa, Abdullahi Bara’u Faskari, and Maa’ruf Amiru Sanusi—the governor emphasized the necessity of efficient case management in the state’s high court of justice. The swearing-in event took place at the Government House Chambers.
In response to growing concerns about the release of suspects facing serious charges, the governor expressed his determination to enhance the functionality of the state’s high court of Justice. He raised alarm about the release of suspects involved in banditry, terrorism, armed robbery, and rape, which subsequently contributed to a surge in kidnappings, abductions, and the tragic loss of innocent lives.
Governor Radda underlined the responsibility of the legal community, noting that some members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) appeared to exploit the banner of fundamental human rights for their personal agendas. He emphasized that such actions should not compromise the ongoing pursuit of justice and security in the state.
To enhance the effectiveness of justice administration, the governor revealed plans to revise two key laws: the Katsina State Administration of Criminal Justice Law of 2021 and the Katsina State Penal Code Law of the same year. These amendments aim to facilitate better cooperation among stakeholders in the justice sector, expediting the resolution of cases spanning arrest, investigation, and prosecution.
Governor Radda also indicated the upcoming review of the Security Challenges Containment Order, with a focus on ensuring the accountability of individuals who provide support for criminal activities as informants under the law. This strategic measure aims to curtail the backing for banditry and its related crimes.
