The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has indicated that several political parties are considering merging with the ruling party in the near future.
The former governor of Kano State made this revelation in response to a visit by Nyesome Wike, the former governor of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with prominent figures from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, to Ganduje’s residence on Tuesday.
During a press briefing alongside Simon Lalong, the immediate past governor of Plateau State and a minister, Ganduje expressed that Wike’s visit marks the beginning of positive developments for the party’s membership expansion under his leadership.
In accordance with his inaugural acceptance speech on August 3rd, Ganduje affirmed his commitment to increasing the party’s membership. Addressing speculation about Wike’s potential defection to the APC, Ganduje clarified that the matter of Wike’s switch of allegiance did not arise during their meeting.
Ganduje stated, “We did not discuss the issue of his coming to APC or not coming to APC. That issue will arise later.” He further noted that the defection of figures like Wike to the APC could greatly enhance the party’s electoral prospects in 2027.
He asserted, “This will certainly bolster the prospects of our party, especially in 2027. Moreover, we are in the process of unveiling a new strategy to expand the party’s following, which encompasses officials from all levels, both within the APC and across other political entities. I assure you that in due course, some political parties will even merge with the APC. We are working on this discreetly.”
Regarding the purpose of the meeting with Wike, the APC chairman clarified, “Wike is now a minister. He came for a discussion because I sought to congratulate him on his new role, and he also extended his congratulations to me. We discussed his aspirations to drive progress within his ministry once he assumes full responsibility, and he expressed his readiness to cooperate.”
Simon Lalong, the Minister of Labour and Employment, and the Director-General of the former APC presidential campaign council, also expressed confidence in Ganduje’s leadership and his ability to elevate the party’s status.
Lalong stated, “Ganduje’s extensive political background, spanning roles such as governor, permanent secretary, commissioner, and deputy governor, has uniquely positioned him to lead our party effectively. We are united in our support for his endeavors, ensuring the party’s continued success.”
