SDP Presidential Candidate Calls for Niger Republic's Democratic Restoration Amid Military Junta Seizure

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate representing the Social Democratic Party (SDP) during Nigeria’s February 25 presidential election, has added his voice to the chorus advocating for the reinstatement of democracy in the Niger Republic.

In the wake of the recent military takeover, Adewole has urged the junta in power to reinstate Mohamed Bazoum, the democratically elected leader who was ousted.

Global leaders, organizations, and various groups have collectively appealed to the military junta, urging them to relinquish power and reinstate democratic governance. Adewole lauded the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for their efforts in ensuring the return of Bazoum, highlighting that the regional organization stands on the right side of history.

Through his official Twitter account, @Pres_Adebayo, Adebayo reiterated the importance of democratic representation. He emphasized that military rule over a population that wasn’t democratically chosen is untenable. Adebayo also stressed that amnesty would be considered for the military junta if they transfer power back to Bazoum and return to their barracks.

Furthermore, Adebayo articulated that swapping Western imperialism with an Eastern counterpart isn’t the solution. He advocated for African nationalism, firmly asserting that the true path forward must be democratic in nature.

He said: “I call on the junta in Niger to surrender now and return to the barracks under amnesty.

“You cannot rule unelected by Nigériens. @ecowas_cedeao is on the good side of history.

“Imperialism of the East is no remedy for imperialism of the West. African nationalism must be democratic.”
