In 2022, Nigerian citizens and other consumers of telecommunication services within the country collectively expended N3.33 trillion on calls, data, SMS, and various other telecom offerings, as reported by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Concurrently, telecommunication companies (telcos) amassed a total revenue of N3.33 trillion throughout the year. These statistics were unveiled in the recently published ‘2022 Subscriber/Network Data Annual Report’ by the NCC.
The commission further revealed that the cumulative count of active subscribers surged from 195,463,898 subscriptions in 2021 to 222,571,568 active voice subscriptions by December 2022, reflecting a notable year-on-year growth of 13.86 percent.
Commenting on the increase, it said, “The increase in the Operators’ subscriber base was attributed to a number of reasons which includes subscriber loyalty, promos, seasonal effects, aggressive consumer acquisition drive, and competitive product offerings across all the networks.”
The report highlighted that the expansion in active subscriptions had a favorable influence on related telecommunications metrics, including teledensity, Internet penetration, and broadband penetration.
Furthermore, the upward trend in data consumption persisted throughout 2022, with a substantial increase of 46.77 percent, reaching a total of 518,381.78 terabytes by the year’s conclusion.
The NCC stated, “There was an increase in the volume of data consumed at the year-end December 2022 when compared with the year-end December 2021.
“The total volume of data consumed by subscribers increased to 518,381.78TB as of December 2022 from 353,118.89TB as of December 2021. This represents an increase of 46.77 per cent in data consumption within the period.”
