Just In: ECOWAS orders immediate military action against Niger junta

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has instructed its standby force to intervene and reinstate constitutional order in the Niger Republic.

President Omar Alieu Touray, the head of ECOWAS, announced this decision while presenting the resolution on the Niger coup during an ECOWAS Extraordinary Meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

The statement also urged the African Union (AU), partner countries, and relevant institutions to provide support for the resolution adopted by the sub-regional organization.

ECOWAS mentioned that despite its persistent attempts to engage in dialogue with the military junta in Niger Republic, their efforts have been consistently rejected by the coup leaders. The statement criticized the ongoing detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members.

The resolution partly reads, “Direct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS standby force with all its elements immediately.

“Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.

“Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.”
