Recently, several Nigerian creators have been receiving payments from the microblogging site X, formerly known as Twitter. This initiative is part of X’s ad-revenue sharing program for creators. It’s worth noting that this program was introduced by Elon Musk, the owner of X, as a way to reward eligible users, specifically those who are subscribed to X Blue (formerly known as Twitter Blue) and have met certain criteria.
The criteria for payment eligibility include being subscribed to X Blue, having earned over five million tweet impressions each month for the past three months, and possessing a Stripe payment account, as specified by X. This initiative aims to incentivize creators who generate popular content that attracts advertisements. In essence, creators can earn a portion of the ad revenue generated from responses to their posts.
X’s content monetization standards are outlined to ensure the quality and appropriateness of the content being monetized. Content related to sexual themes, copyrighted material not owned by the creators, “pyramid schemes or get-rich-quick schemes,” violence, criminal activities, gambling, and substance abuse are all prohibited from being monetized. Attempting to monetize such content is also considered a violation of these standards.
This program reflects X’s efforts to create a mutually beneficial relationship between the platform, its creators, and its users. By rewarding creators for their valuable contributions, X aims to enhance the content quality on its platform while providing creators with an avenue to monetize their efforts.
