Oyo Workers Demand Palliatives, Higher Pensions

In Oyo State, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have joined their counterparts nationwide in a protest that commenced on Monday.

The labor unions, headed by Kayode Martins (NLC) and Bosun Olabiyi (TUC) as their state chairmen, staged a demonstration in the state capital of Ibadan. They marched through the city to make their voices heard.

Initially uncertain about their route, the leaders eventually decided to lead the workers on a march from the Secretariat to Mokola Roundabout and Agodi-Gate, demanding palliatives, an increase in pension allowances, and prompt payment of salary deductions.

Following their route, the labor union leaders returned to the Secretariat, continuing their protest until they were addressed in person by the state Governor, Seyi Makinde.

Addressing newsmen, Martins lamented that, “All the anti-people policies have killed a lot of people in just two months, hence the reason for the peaceful protest.

“No single Nigerian can say he or she has received palliatives from the Federal Government. Initially, they offered with one hand and took with the other. They are not pitying Nigerians, especially downtrodden market men and women. So, no going back on this struggle.”
