Yesterday, civil society organizations gathered in Lagos to warn the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) against proceeding with their proposed protest starting today.
The organizations highlighted that while they acknowledge the challenges faced, the consequences of the protest on the country should be carefully considered.
They expressed concerns that the protest might be taken over by aggrieved individuals benefiting from fuel subsidies, leading to potential loss of lives and property.
The CSOs emphasized that removing fuel subsidies is in the best interest of Nigeria and its people, as the saved funds can be utilized for vital amenities, ultimately contributing to a better country.
They also mentioned that the protest could face similar risks as the EndSARS protest. Both the federal and Lagos State governments have initiated palliative measures to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal, and the CSOs urged other states and local governments to follow suit.
Additionally, the CSOs offered to assist the government in distributing these palliatives to vulnerable members of society.
According to the communiqué, “The humongous funds 30 billion dollars being expended on fuel subsidy amounts to a rip off of the Nigerian people.
“The President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration should be commended for the bold economic decision of removing fuel subsidy in the collective interest of the Nigerian people in the long run.
“It’s a fact that Nigerians are going through economic hardship as a result of this policy, but they must show understanding with the mindset that the pains they are presently going through, is the temporary sacrifice that they have to make for a better future.’’
