Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, is currently leading a meeting of Chiefs of Defence Staff from 15 ECOWAS countries in Abuja on Wednesday to discuss the political situation in the Niger Republic.
Notably, the Defence Chiefs from Niger, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Guinea Bissau are conspicuously absent, indicating their opposition to ECOWAS’ stance on the Niger Republic.
The Committee of Defence Chiefs will deliberate on the ongoing political crisis in Niger and work towards finding a resolution within the 7-day ultimatum issued by ECOWAS leadership on Sunday. The outcome of this meeting could either stabilize the situation in Niger or potentially escalate tensions to a state of conflict.
The countries represented at the meeting include Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, Togo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, Cote d’Ivoire, Cabo Verde, and Senegal.
It was reported that during an extraordinary summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, chaired by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu on Sunday, ECOWAS issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Military junta in Niger, urging them to return to the status quo or face consequences, including the possibility of military action.
