Just in: Sanwo-Olu slashes BRT, ‘danfo’ fares by 50%, 25%

Lagos State Governor, Bababjide Sanwo-Olu, announced a 50% reduction in transport fares on all Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) routes, effective August 2. Additionally, commercial yellow buses (‘Danfo’) will experience a 25% fare reduction on all routes.

The governor conveyed this decision during a press briefing at the State House in Ikeja after a meeting with security agencies, including the Army, Police, and Navy.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also revealed plans to increase the number of Lagos State staff buses, with new buses set to be distributed soon.

To address the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies by the Federal Government and the challenging economic situation, the state will initiate the distribution of food packs to vulnerable citizens. The distribution will be facilitated through Community Development Associations (CDAs), churches, mosques, and local governments.

Buses operated by BRT under the supervision of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) will experience a 50% reduction in fare, while yellow buses will receive a 25% reduction in fare. The decision has been communicated to LAMATA, and discussions are underway with the Lagos Park and Garage authorities for seamless implementation concerning yellow buses.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, highlighted efforts to address security concerns in the state, especially concerning cultists’ activities and vehicle vandalism. “The police have initiated “Operation Flush,” which has led to the arrest of 260 suspects who are currently under investigation.

According to him, the governor has instructed the police to increase their efforts, and he also cautioned that anyone who tries to disturb the state’s harmony will face consequences.
