The suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has been granted bail in his alleged gun possession trial by the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos. Justice Nicholas Oweibo ordered Emefiele’s release on a N20 million bail bond, requiring one surety to provide a similar amount.
The judge’s decision came after Emefiele pleaded “not guilty” to a two-count charge filed against him by the Federal Ministry of Justice. Justice Oweibo also dismissed the Federal Government’s claim that Emefiele posed a flight risk, ruling that the government failed to provide any evidence to support such a claim.
Emefiele, aged 61, had submitted the bail application through his team of counsel, led by Chief Joseph Daudu, SAN, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
