House of Representatives Urges Collaboration for Health Check Desks in Airports

The House of Representatives has called on the Ministry of Aviation to collaborate with relevant healthcare professionals and organizations to establish and operate high blood pressure and sugar level check desks at airports across the country.

Additionally, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is urged to ensure adequate medical facilities are available in Nigerian airports to prevent sudden deaths related to high blood pressure, diabetes, and other conditions. Trained healthcare personnel should staff these desks, providing accurate measurements of blood pressure and sugar levels, offering basic counseling, and referring individuals to appropriate medical services, if necessary.

To enforce these measures, the House has mandated the Committee on Aviation (once constituted) to oversee compliance with the resolutions.

These actions stem from the adoption of a motion titled “Need to Make Provision for Free High Blood Pressure and Sugar Level Check Desks at Airports,” sponsored by Hon. Kalejaiye Adeboye Paul. The House recognizes that air travel can be physically demanding and stressful for many passengers. Combined with the potential health risks associated with long flights and changing environmental conditions, prioritizing the health of individuals passing through airports becomes essential.

The House acknowledges that air travel has become more accessible to a larger population. However, the stress of travel, coupled with the sedentary nature of long flights, can significantly impact the health of individuals, particularly those with pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

It emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the health of individuals traveling through airports and ensuring their access to essential services. By establishing free high blood pressure and sugar level check desks at all airports, the country can promote early detection and preventive care for conditions like hypertension and diabetes.

Regular monitoring of these vital health parameters will enable travelers to seek medical intervention and prevent potential complications. The provision of these check desks will demonstrate the commitment of the country to public health promotion.
