Gunmen have fatally shot Nelson Sylvester, also known as Ofunwa, a councillor representing Eha-Ulo ward in the Nsukka Local Government Area Legislative Council of Enugu State. The incident took place on Sunday night at his residence in Eha-Alumonah.
While precise information about the incident remains limited at the time of reporting, according to a source from the village, the attackers forcefully entered the lawmaker’s residence and unleashed a barrage of bullets upon him. Consequently, the councillor sought refuge in a nearby compound, but sadly, his lifeless body was discovered there later on.
The occurrence has ignited a sense of unease and anxiety not only within the town but also among neighboring communities.
Expressing their concern, the source referred to the suspected assassination as an alarming recurrence, stating, “It is an incredibly distressing situation for us to confront. We are deeply anguished.”
When contacted, Enugu police spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe declined to respond to phone calls. However, upon receiving a text message from The Nation, he replied, “I have not been briefed on such incident. However, I’ll verify and revert back ASAP, please.”
