During the swearing-in ceremony of Mrs. Ngozi Felix as Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and Mr. Ikechukwu Monday as Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities at the Government House in Umuahia, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State emphasized the importance of competence as a key criterion for appointing individuals to leadership positions.
Governor Otti highlighted that the state government is dedicated to ensuring that appointments are granted to individuals who possess the capacity and potential to make significant contributions to the state’s growth. He acknowledged that in the past, appointments were often viewed as a means of political settlement, but the government is determined to change this perception by engaging technocrats who can effectively support the implementation of its rebuilding agenda.
Otti said: “Gone are the days of making appointments to create jobs for the boys”.
“Our appointments are made to add value, and anywhere we see resources, we will go for it”.“
This is due to the understanding that the quality of an institution is directly linked to the capabilities of its personnel. As a result, we are continuously seeking individuals who are the right fit for their respective roles, ensuring that “square pegs are put in square holes” to achieve the best outcomes.
Governor Otti urged the newly sworn-in commissioners to give their utmost commitment as they fulfill their responsibilities, emphasizing that the government and the people of the state will not accept poor performance.
Governor Otti noted that the newly appointed commissioners have established a commendable track record of excellence in their respective careers. This outstanding background highlights the need for them to generate innovative ideas that will enhance socio-economic development in Abia.
“I charge you to bring in your best initiative so that our people will rejoice,” Otti said.
Responding, Mr. Monday thanked the state government for the opportunity to serve the people of Abia. He said that they would live up to expectations and give their best as they performed their duties to transform the state into an investors’ haven.
