Lagos declares zero tolerance for street trading

On Wednesday, the Lagos State Government issued a stern warning to street traders within the state, specifically those operating on the Third Mainland Bridge and Eko Bridge.

In an official statement, Gaji Omobolaji, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards street trading in these areas.

Omobolaji stressed that the action was in line with the T.H.E.M.E.S. Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to promote a cleaner and more aesthetic environment, ensure total enforcement of the environmental sanitation laws and create a safer state for all.

Omobolaji cautioned that individuals caught engaging in street trading would face prosecution in the established Mobile Courts, by the state’s environmental laws. Furthermore, their merchandise, which they display and sell on major roads, would be confiscated.

“The latest enforcement drive against street traders, when commenced, would be a continuous one that would also be sustained,” the statement added.

It was emphasized that in Lagos, a megacity evolving into a smart city, there is no room for street traders. These traders not only mar the visual appeal of the city but also subject themselves to unsafe conditions, posing a risk to the security of people and property.

Furthermore, it was stated that the governor has approved the implementation of strict measures to address this issue. The enforcement will be carried out by a special task force called Kick Against Indiscipline, working in conjunction with other security agencies.
