The Governor of Niger State, Umar Bago, has officially disbanded the State Independent Electoral Commission.
The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, released a statement in Minna on Sunday, confirming the dissolution. According to the statement, the dissolution took effect on May 29.
“Members of the commission are directed to hand over all property of the state government in their possession to the most senior Director with immediate effect,” the statement stated.
The Niger State House of Assembly had previously removed the Chairman of NSIEC, Alhaji Baba Aminu, on September 27, 2022, citing allegations of misconduct. This latest move by Governor Umar Bago solidifies the decision to dissolve the commission.
