I’ll dismantle obstacles to trade – New Customs boss, Adeniyi

Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, the newly appointed Acting Comptroller-General (C-G) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has expressed his determination to remove all barriers to trade within the country.

During his address to the senior officials of the NCS at its headquarters in Abuja, Mr. Adeniyi emphasized his commitment to actively promote trade facilitation as a crucial responsibility of the NCS. He pledged to diligently pursue measures aimed at enhancing the smooth flow of trade operations.

His words: “We will prioritize efficiency in service delivery as the bedrock of trade facilitation and revenue generation. No longer shall encumbrances impede trade; we shall dismantle obstacles and foster a new culture of consultation and compliance.”

Mr. Adeniyi affirmed that his administration would adhere to the principles of professionalism, integrity, and the highest ethical standards as guiding values.

“Over the past eight years, the Nigeria Customs Service has embarked on a journey of transformation, focused on reforms, restructuring, and revenue generation”.

“We have witnessed critical adjustments to meet the evolving needs and strategic objectives of our Service. As beneficiaries and ambassadors of these reforms, many of us have played pivotal roles in training, retraining, and mentoring the future generation of Customs officers”.

“Our administration is committed to adopting a bottom-up approach, where the needs of our dear nation take precedence over everything else,” he said.

Tech-driven customs

The newly appointed Customs chief expressed his commitment to operating a highly technologically-driven organization in alignment with global best practices.

He emphasized, “It is essential for us to acknowledge the modern realities and challenges facing Customs operations. In today’s interconnected and technologically advanced world, we encounter emerging threats that demand our utmost attention.”

He further stated, “E-commerce, global supply chains, and transnational criminal networks present challenges to our role as facilitators of trade and enforcers of regulations. We must adapt to these evolving landscapes by harnessing technology, conducting intelligence-led operations, and implementing effective risk management strategies.”

Mr. Adeniyi stressed the significance of collaboration with international partners, law enforcement agencies, and customs administrations of other nations to combat illicit trade and safeguard national interests.

He highlighted the remarkable achievement of the NCS through the signing of the new Customs Act, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s endeavors to enhance trade facilitation, streamline procedures, and strengthen enforcement measures.

He said, “The new Customs Act provides us with a robust legal framework that aligns with international best practices, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and compliance in our operations.

“It empowers us to effectively tackle emerging challenges, adapt to evolving trade dynamics, and safeguard our national interests.

“Under this act, we have the opportunity to introduce innovative measures that will further enhance our customs processes, such as the implementation of advanced risk management systems, the integration of cutting-edge technologies, and the simplification of trade procedures.

“These advancements will not only boost our revenue generation capabilities but also promote a conducive business environment that attracts investments and spurs economic growth.”

Promises Staff welfare

Regarding his plans for the staff, he stated, “To accomplish our objectives, it is crucial to address the existing human resource gap within our organization. We fully understand the significance of capacity building and career progression for our officers.”

He affirmed, “The administration will diligently implement board-approved career advancement opportunities, prioritizing competence as the sole criterion for assigning responsibilities and evaluating effectiveness.”

“Our primary focus is to nurture a highly skilled workforce that is prepared to confront the challenges of an ever-evolving world.”

He emphasized, “We prioritize the welfare of our staff. We acknowledge the demanding and inhospitable environment in which our officers and personnel are compelled to operate.”

“Therefore, we commit ourselves to prioritizing the welfare and well-being of our personnel. By providing better remunerations, improved accommodations, life insurance, and quality healthcare, we aim to create an environment that supports and motivates our workforce. We understand that a well-motivated team is instrumental in achieving our aims and objectives.”

The Ag. CGC said that he would ensure collaboration and partnership with other government agencies to ensure a smooth trading environment while working to secure the nation.

He emphasized, “We greatly appreciate the relationships we have cultivated with our Partner Government Agencies and the private sector. These partnerships have been instrumental in leveraging technology to bolster revenue generation and streamline operations. We will reinforce these collaborations and actively engage with stakeholders through revitalized platforms.”

Mr. Adeniyi assured, “The Nigeria Customs Service will continue to view its esteemed stakeholders as valuable partners who contribute to our collective success. This administration is fully dedicated to ensuring fairness.”

He further asserted, “We will treat all stakeholders, including traders and officers, with equal impartiality and respect. Our decisions and actions will be guided by the principles of transparency and discipline.”“We understand that our conduct shapes the public’s perception of the Service, and we will strive to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethical behavior. Individualism will not be tolerated as we prioritize fairness and equity.”

In his earlier statement, the outgoing CGC, Col. Ali (rtd), acknowledged that after serving for seven years and eight months, he considered himself a Customs officer.

He further mentioned that the Customs Service had become an integral part of his life and akin to his own family until his last breath.

Col. Ali acknowledged encountering certain challenges during his tenure as CGC but remained steadfast in upholding his beliefs.

He expressed confidence that Mr. Adeniyi would bring substantial contributions to the organization, stating, “he understands the journey. I have faith in his capabilities.”
