A memo has been issued by President Bola Tinubu, instructing the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to rename several federal airports in honor of distinguished Nigerians.
The directive, which was addressed to all Heads of Operations at FAAN, has been titled “Naming of Federal Airports in favour of Some Prominent Nigerians,” by the Federal Ministry of Aviation dated June 1, 2023.
The memo signed by the Director of Airport Operations, Mrs. Joke Olatunji, was made on Monday, read, “I am directed to refer to a memo with reference number, FMA/T4464/7090/T7B/647 from FAAN on the naming of some federal airports after notable Nigerians.
The late sage, Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo, has been honored through the renaming of Port Harcourt Airport. Likewise, the Maiduguri Airport has been renamed in tribute to the immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari.
Furthermore, the Nasarawa Airport has been immortalized in recognition of the esteemed Sheikh Usman Danfodio.
Additionally, as part of the renaming initiative, the Benin Airport has been dedicated to the late Oba of Benin, Oba Akenzua II. Similarly, the Ebonyi Airport now bears the name of the late Senate President Chuba Okadigbo, while the Ibadan Airport is now named after the late Premier of the old Western Region, Ladoke Akintola.
