Grammy Awards: Organisers add Best African Music Performsnce, two others

During the most recent semiannual Board of Trustees meeting held last month, the Recording Academy made significant updates to its music categories for the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. One notable addition is the inclusion of a new music category specifically for African music, titled “Best African Music Performance.” This recognition highlights the vibrant and diverse musical contributions of the African continent.

In addition to the Best African Music Performance category, the Recording Academy also announced two other newly introduced categories: “Best Alternative Jazz Album” and “Best Pop Dance Recording.” These additions reflect the ever-evolving landscape of music genres and provide a platform for artists in these specific genres to receive recognition for their exceptional work.

Furthermore, as part of the amendments, the existing categories of “Producer of the Year, Non-Classical” and “Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical” will be moved to the general field, ensuring their significance and prominence within the overall Grammy Awards structure.

Harvey Mason Jr., the Chief Executive Officer of the Recording Academy, said in a statement on Tuesday that the news categories represent the diverse range of relevant musical genres.

“The Recording Academy is proud to announce these latest category changes to our award process. These changes reflect our commitment to actively listen and respond to the feedback from our music community, accurately represent a diverse range of relevant musical genres, and stay aligned with the ever-evolving musical landscape,” Mason said

The addition of an award category for Africa is a recognition of recordings that utilize unique local expressions from across the African continent.

The newly added category, “Best African Music Performance,” encompasses a wide range of genres, including but not limited to Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz. This comprehensive list ensures that the diverse and dynamic musical expressions from Africa are acknowledged and celebrated within this category.
