Genoveva: Why I quit law for acting

Genoveva, the British-Nigerian actress, says she decided to venture into acting after failing a law exam in her first year.

During her appearance on the ‘Is This Seat Taken’ podcast hosted by Chinasa Anukam, the actress opened up about her journey.

Umeh revealed that while she had always been passionate about acting, it wasn’t her initial area of study.

She had initially pursued a law degree, but after receiving a disappointing grade in her first year of university, she made the decision to follow her passion and pursue a career in acting.

“It was my decision to study law, but I would also say I realized I was like a first-generation immigrant, and I know how hard my parents worked to get me to the UK,” she said.

“I didn’t want to do a course that I just kind of took as a hobby. I thought acting was a hobby; it was something I enjoyed”.

“I literally just went from just thinking of it as a hobby in university to just thinking, when I graduate, I’m going to come back and pursue this”.

“But that didn’t happen until I failed my first year. I failed my first year of law. That’s when I started considering what I actually wanted to do as opposed to what I felt I had to do.”

Umeh completed her law degree at the University of Surrey, England, before she moved to Nigeria in 2018 to fully dedicate herself to her acting career.

Known for her remarkable performances in ‘Blood Sisters’ and ‘Far from Home,’ the actress has gained popularity among audiences.
