How Windstorm destroyed 200 buildings in Borno

Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, has explained how over 200 public and private buildings was destroyed in Biu town by windstorm.

The public buildings included the town’s Government Girls Secondary School and Central Primary School, while the private buildings were residential houses.

Majority of the buildings had their entire roofs completely or partially blown off. But no lives were lost.

“The windstorm preceding a heavy downpour swept across the town starting from 5pm on May 25,”  a resident, Mairo Shettima, who had the roof of her mud house completely blown off,  told newsmen in Biu on Thursday.

“I had just returned from the market when the storm started,” the farmer and mother of eight recalled, saying pathetically, “Since then I have not sought refuge at any relations’ house.” She would not give any reason for her decision.

She continued: “I sleep instead in the house without any roof; whenever it rains, I cover myself with a mat.”
