Lagos, Nigeria – The Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Aisha Abubakar, has called for increased participation of women in governance and urged influential political figures like Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to actively support and promote women’s inclusion in political leadership roles.
The minister made this plea during a recent event where she emphasized the importance of gender diversity and the positive impact it can have on governance and national development. Speaking at a gathering attended by prominent politicians, activists, and women leaders, Mrs. Abubakar highlighted the need to bridge the gender gap in political representation. She commended Asiwaju Tinubu, a respected and influential figure in Nigerian politics, for his contributions to the nation and urged him to utilize his platform to champion the cause of women’s empowerment and participation in governance.
“Women possess unique perspectives, experiences, and skills that can greatly enrich decision-making processes and lead to more inclusive and equitable governance,” stated the Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development. It is essential that we access the skill and opportunities of women by actively involving them in the foremost leadership positions.
Mrs. Abubakar emphasized the significance of gender balance in political representation, highlighting that women make up approximately half of Nigeria’s population and their voices and contributions should be adequately represented in decision-making bodies. She called for political parties and leaders across the nation to embrace gender diversity and create an enabling environment for women to participate actively in politics.
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a renowned politician and former governor of Lagos State, was specifically urged to use his influence to champion the cause of women’s involvement in governance. His leadership and support, it was noted, could serve as a catalyst for change and encourage other political figures to follow suit.
The minister also stressed the need for robust policies and legislation that promote gender equality and empower women to take up leadership positions at all levels of government. She urged policymakers to prioritize the development and implementation of gender-responsive initiatives that address the unique challenges faced by women in politics.
Engaging more women in governance, the minister emphasized, would lead to more inclusive policies and decisions that better reflect the needs and aspirations of the entire population. It would also serve as a powerful tool for advancing gender equality, empowering women economically, and fostering a more just and progressive society.
As Nigeria moves forward on its path of development, the call to engage more women in governance resonates strongly. The active participation of women in politics and decision-making processes is not only a matter of equality but also a crucial step towards achieving sustainable development and a more prosperous future for all Nigerians.
