The 39 members-elect of the Lagos State House of Assembly are supporting incumbent Speaker, Mr Mudashiru Obasa for leadership of the 10th Assembly, a member, Mr Temitope Adewale says.
Adewale, Chairman, House Committee on Transportation, made this known to newsmen at the assembly’s complex in Alausa on Thursday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Obasa, a sixth – term serving lawmaker, has been speaker of the Lagos assembly from 2015.
Adewale (APC-Ifako-Ijaiye I) said the endorsement of Obasa followed a resolution reached by the lawmakers-elect to have the speaker continue with the good works he started in 2015 and sustained in the ninth assembly.
He said the state was fortunate to have Obasa as the speaker, adding that the speaker had succeeded in changing the face of legislative practice in the country.
The lawmaker said the assembly had passed bills that had shaped the state in favour of the people.
“Through Obasa’s leadership style, lawmakers are now more than before, closer to their constituents because we see him living in the midst of his people in Agege and making sure he reaches out to every individual that seeks his attention.
“Lagos cannot afford not to have him as speaker if the fortunes of true governance enjoyed by the state must be sustained.
“Obasa is a stabiliser and has sustained the peace and unity in the house. He is a very accommodating leader who is ready to learn and relearn,” he said.
The lawmaker noted that under Obasa’s leadership, the house had the highest number of non-executive sponsored bills which had helped secure the state and created employment.
According to him, today, we have one of the best houses of assembly in Nigeria because we have practiced all what others are now asking for.
The third term lawmaker said the speaker had moved the house from where it was to be above the common standards of excellence.
Adewale said there was nobody who would challenge the speaker successfully, saying that if they were talking about loyalty, Obasa had remained loyal to the party.
