The Ordinary People of Nsukka, OPON, Enugu State has commended president Mohammed Buhari and the National University commission for the approval of academic take off at the Maduka Onyishi University.
Maduka Onyishi University is the first ever Nsukka indigenous private University located at the boundary between Opi and Ekwegbe communities along Abakpa Nike-Ugwogo -Opi new express road.
It is also about one kilometer away from the Enugu State new Mobile Police Base Ekwegbe. Arising from a Stakeholders meeting at Adada House in Nsukka LG the group said the gesture has again restore confidence on the Federal governments resolve towards encouraging private investments in Nigeria.
They commended Dr Onyishi for the huge investment encouraging him not to be deterred by politics of marginalization and suppression of the Nigerians pointing out that he has given back to the society the much he could to change the society for better.
The University it gathered that the new University has over 120 completed and furnished buildings housing deferent faculties now ready for use.
These includes faculty of Law,,Education Social sciences and medicine, Engineering, sociology, medical Laboratory sciences urban and Reginal planning.
Others are the Senate building, Faculty of Natural Sciences,Center for entrepreneurship, works, planning and Library, University Auditorium Shopping Mall, Caffeterial, Hospital medica center as well as water treatment plant.
The project Engineer Obinna Obi who conducted this correspondent round the University said work on the University Started over ten years ago.
The University according to Obi is constructed inline with the University Standard all over the world with the beast State of the art equipment for teaching and learning.
“The Peace Mass engineering is the supervising construction consultant,and the University project is beeing handled by over 20 contractors working on different projects.
“The project contractor explained that they commenced with 40 buildings,none of which was a bungalow for the first phase while the 2nd phase comprises of facilities ,roads and conference Halls. He emphatically assured that academic activities will start following National University commission approval.”
He said the University will commence academic activities on two wings.The primary and secondary section and the University.The collage according to Obi would also operate boarding school system only for now.
Meanwhile a cross section of both the Academic,Traditional rulers and major Stake holders ,Nsukka and the University community of Nigeria have been speaking their minds on the University project.
The immediate past Vice Chancellor of the Enugu State University of science and technology prof Charles Eze ,described the project as a living legacy project to the the Nsukka community, the present generation,their children and children yet unborn.” This is a living legacy,the multiplier effect to the project on the people of Nsukka,Enugu and Nigeria is unquantifiable,and the greatest lasting legacy to bequite on our children and the generation is Academic Knowledge .
On his part the Vice President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo world wide Chief Damian Okeke Ogene described the finance of the project Dr Sam Onyishi, popularly known as peace Mass Transit as a pride of the Igbo man.”He has also gone a long way to better the society in various capacity.In the transport industry,oil and gas,name it he had also written his name in the books of record.
Prof. Habart Ezea of the department of Mass communication University of Nigeria observed that since the establishment of the famous University of Nigeria in 1960 Sam Onyishi University is the second full fledged university to be sited in the area.
