In the supplemental elections held on Saturday in the states of Kano and Katsina, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reported that it had detained 12 people for allegedly purchasing votes.
Faruk Dogondaji, the EFCC’s Kano Zonal Commander, informed media in an interview that the suspects were taken into custody in Kano and Katsina States with N1.5 million in cash.
He said that two people were detained in Kankiya Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State and ten others were detained in Doguwa LGA of Kano State.
The suspects, according to Mr. Dogondaji, were detained while attempting to bribe eligible voters in several voting places with money.
He said that the 10 suspects were apprehended with N1,357,500 million in Doguwa LGA, while the two suspects were arrested with N242,000 in Kankia LGA.
“We will also be physically present in all the collection centres to prevent change of results,” he said.
He said that the presence of the personnel in the electoral process would add credibility to the exercise.
The EFCC commander said the suspects would be charged to court after investigation.
