A section of a five-story structure at the well-known Balogun Market on Lagos Island was completely destroyed by fire in the early hours of Tuesday, burning items worth millions of naira in the process.
The cause of the inferno could not be determined as of the time of publication. Moreover, no causality was noted.
Meanwhile, the area is in a state of fear as flames and smoke covered the horizon.
An eyewitness claims that the inferno began at 32 Balogun Plaza, where ladies shoe retailers are located, at around 8am.
The Nigeria Police, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, and a few other security agencies have come and roped off the area in preparation for an effective rescue effort.
As of 10.30 am, according to Margaret Adeseye, director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the situation had been brought under control.
The top floor of a five-story structure was affected by a fire that broke out at the famous Balogun Market, according to Adeseye. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently responding to the incident.
The fire is, however, under control because measures to stop it from spreading are being taken.
