Why Bayern Munich have sacked Julian Nagelsmann and hired Thomas Tuchel

Julian Nagelsmann has been left stunned by Bayern Munich’s decision to sack him with the Bundesliga giants still in contention to win the trebble.

The 35-year-old coaching prodigy was informed of the decision on Thursday with Bayern chiefs moving swiftly to appoint former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

Tottenham had been exploring the possibility of appointing Tuchel as they consider their options ahead of the likely sacking of Antonio Conte.

Conte, who returned to Italy earlier this week in the wake of his astonishing attack on his own players, was again absent from first team training yesterday, adding to the mounting speculation that Daniel Levy is primed to end his turbulent 16-month spell in charge.

Spurs’ hopes of appointing another ex-Chelsea boss have, however, been dashed with Bayern’s hierarchy moving decisively to appoint Tuchel who had been out of work since he was sacked by Todd Boehly in September.

On the face of it, Bayern are well placed to enjoy another trophy-laden season with a domestic cup quarter-final against Freiburg to look forward to, while they are also through to the last eight of the Champions League where they will face Manchester City.

The race for the Bundesliga, meanwhile, looks to be a straightforward battle between Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, with the defending champions just a single point behind their main rivals with nine games remaining.

According to Sky Germany, however, Bayern chiefs have grown concerned at the way in which Bayern have surrendered their domestic dominance this season given they won the title last term by eight point and 13 points the previous year.

Moreover, the lack of progress made by the club’s young players, including the likes of Jamal Musiala, has caused alarm while Sadio Mane’s struggles since his high-profile move from Liverpool has been attributed to Nagelsmann’s management style.

With Bayern facing a such a decisive period, the final straw came when the former Hoffenheim coach opted to take a skiing holiday during the current international break, rather than remain at the club and work on a strategy that would see the club through such a testing period.
