LYON V CHELSEA – MATCH FACTS

Two of European football’s heavyweights meet at the Groupama Stadium on Wednesday evening when Lyon and Chelsea go head-to-head in a UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final, first leg tie.

Lyon are the eight-time winners of the trophy while they come up against a Chelsea side that are still searching for their first European title.

Ahead of the match, FAWSL Full-Time have been reviewing the UEFA match statistics. Here are three points to note about Chelsea’s fixture in Lyon.

Two sides who win quarter-finals

Both sides have good records when it comes to winning quarter-final ties in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Lyon have won seven of their last nine quarter-final matches (L2) while Chelsea have won five of their six quarter-final matches (L1), advancing to the semi-finals on all three occasions.

Lyon successful against English, Chelsea’s solid record against French

Both clubs have had lots of success against teams from their latest opponents’ nation. Lyon have lost just two of their 13 European matches against English clubs (W8 D3) while Chelsea have lost two of their eight European matches against French clubs (W5 D1).

A low-scoring affair to come?

Lyon haven’t conceded a goal in their last four UEFA Women’s Champions League games. Chelsea have also kept things tight at the back with Emma Hayes’ side having kept five clean sheets in their six UEFA Women’s Champions League matches this season and eight in their last 10 games in the competition. Both sides could be rock solid when they meet in the South of France.

The UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final, first leg tie between Lyon and Chelsea kicks-off at 5.45pm on Wednesday evening.
