How Sanwoolu, Abiodun, four others sitting governors got reelected

The results of Saturday’s governorship and house of assembly election threw up no surprises in Lagos, Gombe, Ogun, Oyo, Yobe and Kwara as governors in those states got reelected.

Eleven sitting governors vied for reelections out of the 28 states where governorship elections took place on Saturday and as of press time, six of them have been declared winners.

It was a bountiful harvest for the All Progressives Congress as it won in five of the six states namely Lagos, Ogun, Kwara, Yobe, and Gombe. The Peoples Democratic Party won in Oyo.

Here is how the Governors emerged

 

Babajide Sanwo-Olu ( Lagos)

Despite the pre-election anxiety Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC had a smooth ride back to the Government House Alausa after securing a landslide victory.

The Governor recorded 762,134 votes to trounce his opponents Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party and Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran from PDP.

Rhodes-Vivour polled 312,329 to come second while Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, came a distant third with paltry 62,449 votes.

It was a total domination by Sanwo-Olu as he won a whopping 19 local government areas of the state leaving only Amuwo-Odofin LGA to Rhodes-Vivour.

The Governor cleared Agege, Apapa, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Alimosho, Ikorodu, Somolu, Kosofe, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Epe, Ibeju-Lekki, Mushin, Surulere, Ikeja, Ojo, Badagry and Oshodi-Isolo.

He also won in Eti-Osa where the election was held in 10 polling units yesterday.

The results showed that the LP lost all the local governments it won during the presidential election.

Dapo Abiodun (Ogun State)
The opposition, PDP, gave the incumbent APC a run for its money in the governorship election but Governor Dapo Abiodun still found his way to victory in the keenly contested polls.

According to the INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, Abiodun polled a total of 276,298 votes to emerge winner of the election.

The Governor secured his victory having won in 12 local government areas of the state.

His closest rival, Ladi Adebutu of the PDP, scored 262,383 votes having won in eight LGAs while Biyi Otegbeye of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), managed 94,754 votes.

Adebowale also said the total number of registered voters 2,688,305, while accredited voters were 666,406 while 18,835 votes s were rejected out of the 663,968 total votes cast.

AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara)
AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Governor of Kwara State had no qualms about staging a comeback to the Government House in Ilorin sweeping results in all the 16 local governments of the state.

Announcing the results at the INEC office, Ilorin on Sunday, the returning officer for the state governorship election and Vice-Chancellor, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Prof Isaac Itodo, said Abdulrazaq scored 273,424 votes to beat his closest rival, Alhaji Yaman Abdullahi of the PDP who polled 155,490 votes in the election.

Itodo disclosed that 470,771 voters were accredited for the election while 460,497 votes were declared valid and over 4,000 votes were invalid.

Seyi Makinde (Oyo)
Governor Seyi Makinde secured 563,756 votes to clinch victory, over Teslim Folarin of the APC came second with 256,685 votes.

Adebayo Adelabu of the Accord Party polled 38,357 votes to come a distant third.

Makinde secured victory in 31 of the 33 LGAs in the state, while the APC won two LGAs.

Adebayo Bamire, INEC returning officer for the Oyo governorship election, announced the final result around 3:30pm, yesterday.

Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe)

In Gombe, INEC declared the incumbent governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner.

The returning officer, Prof. Maimuna Waziri, of the Federal University, Gashua, said Yahaya scored 342,821 votes to defeat his closest rival, Muhammad Jibril Barde, of the PDP who polled 233,131 votes.

She said Khamisu Ahmed Mailantarki of the NNPP came third with 19,861 votes, while Keftin Amuga Esau of Labour Party (LP) scored 1,753 votes to come fourth.

Prof. Maimuna said there were 1,575,794 registered voters, 618,231 accredited voters, 605,355 valid votes, 11,390 rejected votes and 616,745 total votes cast.

She said Yahaya won in nine of the 11 local government areas of the state.

Governor Yahaya is the third consecutive governor of the state to win a second term in office after his predecessors – Muhammad Danjuma Goje in 2007 and Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo in 2015.

Governor Mai Mala Buni (Yobe State)

Also, in Yobe State, Governor Mai Mala Buni was re-elected having won the highest votes in all the 17 local government areas of the state with a total of 317,113 votes. His closest challenger of the PDP, Alhaji Sharif Abdullahi, came second with 124,259 votes.

The Returning Officer, Prof. Umar Pate, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Kashere, Gombe State, said accredited voters were 459,492, valid votes, 444,567 and total votes cast, 457,781.

He said the candidate of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Garba Umar Alhaji Tsunami, got 14,246 votes; while Arabi Muhammad of Action Alliance (AA) scored 3,260 votes.
