IWD: Forum advocates 45% women participation in governance

The Badagry Development Women Forum (BDWF) on Wednesday advocated for 45 per cent women participation in governance in the three tiers of government.

Mrs Sewede Pot-Balogun-Olorunfemi, the Principal Coordinator, BDWF, made the appeal during the World International Women’s Day programme organised by the forum in Badagry, Lagos State.

According to the Principal Coordinator,  women need to be put in strategic places because they deserve it.

“In any activity, you will find women working seriously; even during election, women take active part. We deserve 45 per cent in governance, if not 50 per cent,” she said.

She urged women to embrace technology and use it maximally to tell beautiful stories of womanhood.

Pot-Balogun-Olorunfemi, said March 8 is observed as International Women’s Day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women from all around the world.

“As women, we are not seeking to be ‘equally’ treated. We are seeking to be ‘equitably’ treated.

“A man may not need a sick leave monthly because he doesn’t have painful menstrual cramps whereas some women may need it.

“We raise our voices this day and ask that we please be considered for a shoe that fits.

“The theme for this year’s Women’s Day, according to the United Nations, is “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality” she said.

Mrs Sessi Agemo, the Decision Maker, BWDF, said women are very important in every home.

According to her, their influence is great and their roles in families cannot be underestimated.

She urged the government to give women the opportunity to showcase their talents in the society.

“They should be tolerated no matter their weaknesses; they must be treasured because they are pillars that uphold every home.

“Kudos to women that sell their properties so as to give their children sound education,” she said.

Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende, the Special Adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Special Duties  and Inter-governmental Relations, appealed to women to take care of their wards for a better future.

Ogunlende, who is also the patron of BWDF, said youths engaging in drugs and cultism would end up in prison.

Represented by Mr Babatunde Avoseh, a tourist expert, he charged women to always ensure that they prevent their children from joining bad gangs for a better tomorrow.

The women groups from all the three councils in Badagry graced the occasion.
