The mortal remains of the late former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, have arrived in the state in preparation for his funeral rites and burial. Akeredolu, who succumbed to prostate cancer in Germany in December 2023, will be honoured with various ceremonies.
The funeral rites commenced with the Ajabue traditional rite in his hometown of Owo, the headquarters of the Owo Local Government Area, today. A Special Court Session in his honour is scheduled at Court 1 of the Ondo State High Court on the same day.
Tomorrow, February 22, a public holiday, will feature a Service of Songs at St. Andrews Cathedral, Imola Street, Owo, at 4:00 pm. The Wake-Keep at Maranatha Villa, Owo, is set for 8:00 pm, followed by a Candlelight Procession and World Gyration by the Kegites Club from 8:00 pm till dawn. Additionally, there will be a Lying in State and Commendation Service at the Akure Township Stadium and an Evening of Tributes at Saint Andrews Church in Owo on the same day.
“Friday, February 23 (public holiday): Funeral Service at St. Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo by 10 a.m.
“Interment follows immediately after the burial service at the burial site, Owo which is strictly for immediate family and reception will be held thereafter at Mydas Hotel and Resort, Ikare Road, Owo, by 1:00 pm.
“On Saturday, February 24, 2024: Akeredolu Memorial Friendly Football Match, Akure Township Stadium, Akure, Time: 3:00 pm.
“On Sunday, February 25, 2024: Thanksgiving Service at St. Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo, Time: 10:00 am.”
