Census: NPC flags off NDHS exercise in Akwa Ibom

The National Population Commission (NPC) commenced the 2023-2024 Nigeria Demographic Health Survey (NDHS) in Akwa Ibom State to prepare for the forthcoming population and housing census.

This survey spans 25 local government areas, encompassing 39 clusters and 14,000 households, with a specific focus on women’s and children’s health concerns.

During the kickoff event, NPC Chairman Nasir Isa Kwarra assured the public of a trustworthy population census. He expressed confidence in the readiness of the remodeled infrastructure for this exercise, represented by Federal Commissioner Chief Benedict Ukpong of Akwa Ibom State.

According to him, “As you are aware, the commission is still carrying out the preparation for the next census. In this regard, we will leave no stone unturned to make sure that all corresponding facilities, including a habitable and good working environment, are delivered to ensure the constitutional mandate of the Commission is fulfilled, amongst which is the effective delivery of the next population and housing census, which will be credible, reliable and acceptable”.

Chief Benedict Ukpong outlined the primary objectives of the 2023-2024 NDHS, stressing its aim to gather robust data across critical indicators such as fertility rates, maternal and child health, contraception usage, childhood mortality, gender issues, nutrition, HIV/AIDS awareness, and more.

The State Director, representing Ukpong, underscored the survey’s role in providing essential data to support maternal and child health evaluations and family planning initiatives. This data will be pivotal for evidence-based planning and allocation of resources.

Additionally, Mrs. Helen Amakwe, the NDHS State Coordinator, highlighted that this survey occurs every five years, constituting the eighth iteration in Nigeria. She clarified that the NDHS is a nationwide semi-census program, encompassing all 36 states of the Federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
