JUST IN: ECOWAS imposes more sanctions on Niger

New sanctions have been imposed by the Economic Community of West African States in response to the coup in the Niger Republic.

Earlier, the regional bloc had given the Niger junta seven days to reinstall President Mohamed Bazoum or face sanctions, including potential military intervention.

However, the coup plotters called ECOWAS’s bluff and promised to thwart any foreign intrusion on its territory.

Additionally, it severed connections with Nigeria, Togo, France, and the United States and permanently closed Nigerien airspace.

After the deadline had passed, the group decided to meet on Thursday to discuss the state of affairs in the country of West Africa.

Speaking to reporters at the State House on Tuesday, the president’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, announced that more sanctions had been placed on people and organizations connected to the military junta in Niger.

Although he did not go into details, he said this was carried out through the Central Bank of Nigeria
