Nigerian singer Bella Shmurda has opened up about one of the most painful and difficult moments from his early days as an aspiring musician, revealing that he once stole a neighbour’s son’s bicycle and sold it to raise money for a studio session.
According to the singer, the incident happened while he was living in Okoko, Lagos, at a time when he was desperately trying to push his music career forward but had little or no money to record.
Bella recalled that he took the bicycle at night, hid it and eventually sold it at a market for ₦7,000. The money was then used to pay for studio time.
Although the decision helped him record music at the time, Bella said the memory continued to weigh on his conscience even after he became successful. Determined to make amends, he eventually tracked down the boy and bought him a new bicycle.
For Bella, it was more than simply replacing what had been stolen. It was an attempt to confront a painful part of his past and make peace with a decision he made during a desperate period of his life.
His journey to fame began gaining serious momentum in 2019 after his music caught the attention of a prominent rapper, who featured him on a remix. That collaboration helped introduce Bella to a wider audience and marked a major turning point in his career.
He has since grown into one of Nigeria’s notable street-pop artists, building a successful career from the same difficult circumstances he once struggled to escape.
But behind the fame, hit songs and success is a story that shows just how difficult his journey was. At a time when ₦7,000 could mean the difference between recording a song and giving up on a dream, Bella made a choice he would later regret.
The singer has also spoken fondly about growing up in Okoko and his desire to return to his community someday as a successful person who can give back and make a difference in the lives of others.
His story is a reminder that the road to success is not always glamorous. Sometimes, people make difficult decisions when faced with poverty, desperation and limited opportunities — decisions they may view very differently once life changes.
For Bella Shmurda, buying the boy a new bicycle could never erase what happened, but it showed that he had not forgotten his past and was willing to take responsibility for it.
