Three members of a vigilante group have been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command following the death of a 39-year-old man in their custody.
The deceased, identified as Abdulrazak Ibrahim, died at the vigilante office in Bakin Kura area of Bauchi Local Government Area while being questioned over a theft complaint.
The police said Abdulrazak had been brought to the office following a complaint by his mother, Hauwa Ibrahim, who sought the recovery of stolen property and identification of suspected receivers.
The incident was reported to the police by the chairman of the vigilante group on August 20, 2026.
Detectives from ‘A’ Division Township were subsequently deployed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
The police said the three vigilantes on duty at the time had been taken into custody to assist with the investigation.
The deceased’s remains have been deposited at the ATBU Teaching Hospital mortuary, while an autopsy is expected to determine the actual cause of death.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, directed detectives to conduct a comprehensive investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the law.
He also warned against jungle justice and other forms of extrajudicial action, stressing that only lawful authorities are empowered to investigate and prosecute alleged offences.
The command assured the public that the outcome of the investigation would be made public in due course.
